Using one of my photos

Using one of my photos

Many people ask for the right to use my photos in a variety of contexts -- album covers, web sites, advertising. (A lot more people just abuse them without asking me, and even worse inline them from my web site to make me pay for the bandwidth. Grrr.)

I do allow this from time to time, but I always have to be asked. When people ask I point them here, but the rules on this page don't apply to you until I agree to your use and point you here.

Prints

Prints are typically available for $10 per square foot plus shipping. Minimum of $20 (2 square feet or less.) Contact me.

Commercial Uses

For commercial uses -- advertising, billboards, business web sites, brochures, trade show booths etc. -- contact me to negotiate a rate.

Please let me know the type of use, how large you want the image to be, which image (ideally with URL) and for printed materials, how many you will be making or other relevant details. For magazines provide circulation.

Credit and Links

On almost all internet uses, in addition to the fees, a credit link is required. The link can go to my home page, or to my photography page or to the actual HTML container page (not the image itself) on which the image was found. Here is an example container page.

The link doesn't have to go on the same page as the photo, but ideally it should. In fact, the ideal is that near the photo would be something along the lines of

For printed uses, a small "liner notes" credit is desired, in a form like "Photo Credit: Brad Templeton www.templetons.com" or similar. It doesn't have to be in very big print.

Burning Man Photos

For photos from Burning Man, the Burning Man organization requires that use of such photos include a note the photo came from Burning Man. Certain commercial uses require a donation to the Black Rock Arts Foundation.

Non-commercial uses

Album covers

For non-signed, independent bands selling under 200 albums, use is free, with the credit links described above on your web site and a similar credit in the liner notes. However, should your band become "pro" the licence does not cover that and you should contact me for terms.

Frankly, I do feel that the photographer should make as much money as the people who print the paper for the insert, but to avoid the hassles on small bands I don't insist on it.

Personal web site

Free use is allowed, only after asking, at lower resolutons, with the appropriate credit links.

If you make more than $100/month from your web site, the free permission is not available.

You can do minimal cropping. Major cropping should be noted somewhere. Talk to me about serious modifications.

Club and school newsletters and handouts

For these non-commercial uses, free use is permitted, again only after asking, for print runs under 500, with appropriate credit.
